Original Freda and the Firedogs "Sundays at the Opry" Poster (c. 1973–1974)
An original Austin music scene artifact from the golden age of progressive country.
Size: 11” x 17”
This rare vintage poster promotes Freda and the Firedogs' legendary Sunday residency at the Texas Opry House, located at 200 Academy Drive. Featuring striking hand-drawn artwork and advertising $1 admission, the poster captures a moment when Austin's emerging counterculture, country music tradition, and independent creative spirit were colliding to create an entirely new sound.
Freda and the Firedogs formed in 1972 and quickly became one of the most influential bands of Austin's early progressive country movement. Led by pianist and vocalist Marcia Ball, the group helped lay the foundation for what would become Austin's nationally recognized music scene. Their blend of country, blues, rock and roots music drew an unusually diverse audience and established them as one of the city's defining bands of the era.
Today, Marcia Ball is celebrated worldwide as a Grammy-nominated artist, Blues Hall of Fame inductee, ACL Hall of Fame member, and Texas State Musician. Beyond her musical legacy, she is also a founding member of HOME, the Austin nonprofit she helped create to support aging musicians facing housing insecurity.
Unlike modern reproductions, this is an original period poster from the band's active years. Pieces from Austin's formative music era rarely survive, making this an exceptional collectible for fans of Texas music history, Marcia Ball, progressive country, the Texas Opry House, and the early Austin scene.
